Meet Helen – Aesthetics Nurse

Helen is a qualified Aesthetics Nurse providing a high level of personalised treatment at her private clinic in North Somerset

Hello, my name is Helen.

I decided to write some blog articles chronicling my journey into aesthetics.

First and foremost I am a nurse through and through. I had a 39-year career as a Nurse, Ward Sister, and Matron, working clinically, promoting clinical excellence, and reviewing safety for my Directorate at Royal United Hospital.

The majority of my career was spent within gynecological wards at the Royal United Hospital, caring for patients who were extremely unwell, often at time of huge distress. This was a role I loved and after 39 years I remained passionate and committed to my vocation and those under my care.

Unfortunately following a serious car accident and decades of Nursing, my spine deteriorated to the point where I was unable to perform the role of a Full time surgical matron or nurse and had to retire on ill health grounds from the NHS.

Following recovery from life-changing back surgery, I wanted to utilise my clinical skills and support people with something that helped them feel happy and more confident, yet was something I do around my own physical limitations.

I have loved the learning and development I have gained as an Aesthetics Nurse, and I love the feeling of confidence and self esteem aesthetics has provided for my clients. At times, the effects of subtle, well-administered aesthetic intervention are almost miraculous to my clients.

But, coming from the NHS I have also been shocked at questionable standards, poor training, and complete lack of regulation of the Aesthetics Industry in the UK.

Unfortunately, we are now in a situation where non-clinicians are injecting questionable products or performing quasi-medical procedures with no formal training or understanding of the potential consequences should things go wrong. The recent incident resulting in the death of a young woman after receiving a ‘nonsurgical’ Brazilian butt lift. This is a significant procedure performed by an individual with no formal training or clinical qualification who then did not know how to recognise life-threatening symptoms as a result of his interventions.

We currently have individuals injecting products with no proven research base and little or no understanding of how to correct complications should they arise. Indeed my own experience of Botox treatment involved a non clinician injecting inappropriately mixed or dosed Botox which had little or no effect

So, my intention is to provide safe, effective treatments using pharmaceutical grade products correctly administered to give my clients the results they desire in the safest possible manner.

Participating in my client’s aesthetics journey has been highly rewarding and a genuine privilege. If you want to improve your self confidence and soften the effects of aging I’d love to help.

Best Wishes Helen
